HYDRO METEOROLOGICAL REGIME AND FLOOD PERSPECTIVE IN THE HUMID TROPICAL REGIONS OF EAST ASIA, SOUTHEAST ASIA AND THE PACIFIC

In a discussion of the hydro meteorological regime in the humid tropics of Eastern and Southeast Asia, the paper reviews mechanisms responsible for atmospheric circulation (namely the Southwest monsoon and the Northeast monsoon) in order to provide better understanding of the flood situation in the region. Countries in the Northern hemisphere are much affected by the presence of typhoon and cyclones due to the formation of low-pressure systems. Large tracts of agricultural lands are inundated due to the effect of these large-scale disturbances.

FLOOD ESTIMATION FOR A SELECTED CATCHMENT IN TIOMAN ISLAND

Several synthetic methods for flood estimation have appeared in the literature. Apparently all tend to give different results due to the different parameters and variables used to derive the empirical relationships. We applied 6 methods to determine time of concentrations. This time of concentrations are used to determine the design floods of various return periods. It is found that the Modified Snyder Method is most suitable for the Tioman Island. However, further check needs to be carried out using rainfall runoff model.
